Reading Needs Analysis
Introduction:
III-Zeal is the star section of the 3rd year high school of St. Bridget College Alitagtag. Students from that section have an average grade of 90 in their English subject. Also, they are fluent in speaking English. As I see them read, they comprehend better that a usual college student. They also explained to me that they love reading to gain more information; they didn’t treat reading as pass time and entertainment.
I choose them for my survey because I know that their great and will give good results.

Thinking and Talking About Books: Using Prompts to Stimulate Discussion
Four first-grade teachers used discussion prompts to encourage thinking about and responding to text in different ways. This article describes how the teachers introduced the prompts and provides examples of how the prompts were integrated into classroom activities. Teachers found that using the prompts was an effective way to initiate and scaffold authentic conversation about books for all their students. This included children who were English Language Learners as well as those with special needs. The systematic teaching and use of the prompts provided a framework for thinking about books, both before and after reading. As a result, the young students began to understand that reading related to meaning and the text was something they could think and talk about. Students enthusiastically discussed their ideas and listened to others. This exchange of ideas was not only motivating, but eventually encouraged more original responses and reflections.

Hypertext Versus Printed Text
John Tolva argues that since words in print and words in electronic formats mean the same thing, the only difference between hypertext and print text is perception. I don't agree. Looking at the digital nature of hypertexts, though valuable in terms of recognizing the fundamental technology of computer generated works of art (be they writing, visual, etc.), is like looking at texts and painting as essentially the same thing: ink or paint on some kind of surface. Just because a poem and a painting are both comprised of a substance placed on a surface, doesn't mean they are "essentially identical." After all, is not the letter "u" simply a series of particles of ink (the ones and zeros of the primitive world) arranged in a specific way that constitutes what we have designated as the letter "u" in our alphabet? And doesn't a slightly different arrangement of those particles of ink constitute another letter entirely, say "v"? My point here is that the medium does not affect the way we think of words to the extent Tolva suggests.
The important difference between print and hypertext is not the fundamental technology of how the letters and words are displayed (ones and zeros or particles of ink), but what readers can do with the text. If text is "that which is woven," the difference between printed and hypertexts is in who does the weaving: in print the author is solely responsible for weaving the text, in hypertext the reader takes on the responsibility (with the help of authors who provide suggestions to the reader on possible directions--and this can be multiple authors in multiple works).

High Demand for Information Technology Jobs
It shouldn't come as a surprise that as computers affect our lives more and more, that someone has to keep everything humming along smoothly. That's what information technology professionals do. Although the field is very broad, it's focused on computers, and how information is shared electronically and kept secure.
"I take care of all of the Information Technology needs here at channel 13.” says Steve Warfield, IT Specialist, KRCG-TV.Warfield says that even thought there are 2 computers for every one person at KRCG, the job isn't just about the computers.“I find you have to decide that you want to work on computers but you also have to service the people that use the computers,” Warfield said. “They know how to use the computer but they don't know what to do when a computer doesn't do right and that's when the IT guy steps in.”
Job sites are full of IT jobs, in fact, according to Beyond.com's Career Trend Analysis, almost 13% of all jobs posted online are in the Information Technology field."I see this being the job market of the future,” said John Truesdell of Rose International, which provides IT services to companies worldwide. nTruesdell says demand is rising.“We're simply not educating enough new talent to supply the demand that we have here today,” Truesdell said.Even in a down economy, Truesdell believes the demand will still be there.
“I think you're going to see businesses wanting to turn to technology a little bit more to try to ease the sharpness of that bite,” said Truesdell.According to Truesdell, $50,000 a year plus benefits is not uncommon for those starting out in the IT field.

Summary of the Main Idea :

New Ideas I’ve Learned:
(nothing's new, for me)
Significant Lines:
Even in a down economy, Truesdell believes the demand will still be there.
Ideas I Agree or Disagree with:
I agree with “Job sites are full of IT jobs, in fact, according to Beyond.com's Career Trend Analysis, almost 13% of all jobs posted online are in the Information Technology field.” Because I’ve been searching for many my career in the future and I’ve seen that there are really many jobs for IT all over the Philippines and the globe.
Words in the Text that I Like to use Writing:
(everything, for me, is usually used when I write)
Ideas I Can Relate to my Previous Knowledge:
What I know about IT professionals are that they will program software. This text gives me the idea that with the program that IT professional make, it’s the one helps the people in trouble, in a certain industry.
Ideas I Want to Learn About:
How much is the salary of an IT professional?
Over-all rating of the material:
5, because it doesn’t give me more information, but the effort is there in giving information for people with no idea about this.
Franco is a Filipino rock supergroup with members from different Filipino bands. The lineup consists of Franco Reyes (of InYo) on vocals, Gabby Alipe (of Urbandub) on guitar, Paolo "8" Toleran (of Queso) on guitar, Buwi Meneses (of Parokya ni Edgar) on bass guitar, and JanJan Mendoza (of Urbandub) on drums.
Franco started as a collaboration project between its members, who are veterans of the Pinoy rock scene. However, Franco's roots are traced from the Cebu-based band Frank, which Reyes formed in 1996. Frank was one of the bands that boosted the Cebu rock scene, In late 2008, Gabby Alipe, Mendoza, Toleran and Meneses collaborated with Reyes, who returned to the Philippines, to form Franco.
Franco started by playing songs from Frank and Inyo. In 2009, they released their self-titled full-length album under MCA Music. Music videos for “Cast Away” and their latest single “This Gathering” were aired on Filipino music channel MYX. Franco also dominated the 2010 NU Rock Awards by winning four awards—Artist of the Year, Song of the Year for “This Gathering”, Album of the Year for their self-titled album, and the Listeners' Choice Award.
Though most of its songs were originally written by Reyes with Frank and Inyo, Franco's music is stengah to the ears and considerably heavier than the reggae-leaning sound of Frank and the alternative rock sound of Inyo. Interestingly, two song“Touch the Sky” and “Song for the Suspect" have Rastafarian messages such as the spiritual use of marijuana and the belief in Jah, the almighty god of the Rastafarian faith.

Nothing is Constant
Graphic Organizer(nothing is Constant) |
I’m a fresh graduate from high school and now a freshman on college. Many things have changed. In High School, the time I would be staying in school is constant (around 9-10hrs)while in College, I would be staying at school depending on how many subjects you have on a specific day. In high school, I have to wear my uniform everyday while in college, I have a wash day, once a week, were I can wear any casual clothes. In high school I would always use intermediate paper while in college, I use yellow paper but I use pen in writing in both levels. In high school, I would be staying at a certain room as my classroom for a whole year while in college, I would transfer into another room every subject. In high school, there is 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th grading period while in college, there is 1st, 2nd, semester, midterm and finals.
This only an example of change we encounter in life. Let all remember that “The only Constant in this World is Change”. That’s why, in all of this changes we should learn to adjust for us to enjoy a better living.

PARAMORE
Paramore is an American rock band from Franklin, Tennessee, formed in 2004. The band consists of lead vocalist Hayley Williams, bassist Jeremy Davis, and guitarist Taylor York. The group released its debut album All We Know Is Falling in 2005, and its second album Riot! in 2007, which was certified Platinum in the US and The Republic of Ireland and Gold in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. Brand New Eyes, Paramore's third album, was released in 2009 and is the band's highest charting album to date, going platinum in the UK and the Republic of Ireland and gold in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
In 2002, at age 13, vocalist Hayley Williams moved from her hometown Meridian, Mississippi to Franklin, Tennessee where she met brothers Josh Farro and Zac Farro while she was attending a private school. Shortly after arriving, she began taking vocal lessons withBrett Manning Prior to forming Paramore, Williams and bassist Jeremy Davis, along with friend Kimee Read, took part in a funk cover band called The Factory, while Josh and Zac Farro had practiced together after school. The other members of what was soon to be Paramore had been "edgy about the whole female thing" of having Williams as vocalist, but, because they were really good friends, she started writing for them.
Williams said of the guys when she first met them, "They were the first people I met who were as passionate about music as I was." The band was officially formed by Josh Farro (lead guitar/backing vocals), Zac Farro (drums), Jeremy Davis (bass guitar) and Hayley Williams (lead vocals) in 2004, with the later addition of Williams' neighbor Jason Bynum (rhythm guitar). When Davis showed up, he was stunned to find out the drummer was only twelve years old. He admitted "I had very, very, very, little faith in everyone in the band because of their age. I remember thinking, 'This is not going to work because this kid is way too young,' but that first day of practice was amazing. I knew we were on to something." According to Williams, the name "Paramore" came from the maiden name of the mother of one of their first bass players.Once the group learned the meaning of the homophone "paramour" ("secret lover"), they decided to adopt the name, using the Paramore spelling.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Latin Spells and Charms
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, J.K. Rowlings uses spells and charms that are largely based on Latin. One of the most serious spells, however, Avada Kedavra, may be based on Aramaic or it could be what one forum poster suggests, a variant of two Latin words, "evado" (which has evade as an English cognate) + "cadaver". It appears to be a variant on the old "abracadabra" of muggle magicians. In the Harry Potter series, it is a spell that causes death. Harry Potter is the only one known to have survived it.
The following Harry Potter spell identifications come from my reading. "Latin" means the spell is a Latin word. "Latinate" means the spell is like or is based on Latin. "?" means I have no idea what the etymology is. Do you? If you have additions, please let me know. If you have contrary or additional information about the Latin spells and charms in Harry Potter, I would appreciate hearing it. Suggestions for translations have been provided by the Ancient/Classical History Forum.
Accio (p. 582) Latin - I summon
Aguamenti (p. 606) not Latin - although Agua comes from Aqua which is Latin for water.
Alohomora (p. 159) unknown - supposed to unlock a door.
Clark T.: I was looking over your page about Latin in Harry Potter for a school project and noticed you had nothing written for the "Alohamora" spell. Surprisingly, this does not come from Latin and is actually spelled "Aloha Mora" as two words. It is actually from a Hawaiian dialect, "aloha" meaning goodbye (or hello), and "mora" meaning lock. It literally translates to "goodbye lock".
Amortentia (p. 185) - a potion for love based on the Latin amor=love.
Anapneo (p. 144) Greek - I recover breath (clears the breathing).
Avada Kedavra (p. 596)- death spell/curse, not Latinate.
Crucio (p. 598) Latin - I torture/crucify.
Diffindo (p. 220) Latin - I divide.
Episkey (p. 157) Greek - (episkeuo) I repair (to mend Harry's broken nose).
Felix felicis (p. 187) Latin for fortunate, lucky, or happy, but also the biological name for a cat. Felix is the nominative singular, and felicis is the genitive singular.
Impedimenta (p. 599) Latin plural of impedimentum, which means obstacle, hindrance, impediment. In Latin, the plural often means baggage. This is used as a jinx.
Incarcerous (p. 575) Latinate - the ending is English. In carcer would mean in prison.
Imperius (p. 42) Latinate based on the word imperium which meant power.
Inferi (p. 62) Latin - Inhabitants of the Underworld.
Langlock (p. 420) Not Latin. Locking of tongue against the roof of the mouth. Probably based on a connection between lingua and language.
Levicorpus (p. 238) Latin - Levis=light and corpus=body so the spell lifts a body.
Liberacorpus (p. 239) Latin - counterspell to levicorpus, libera= free, so liberacorpus frees the body.
Lumos (p. 62) Latinate - lumen=light and lumos is a light-creating spell.
Oppugno (p. 302) Latin - I fight against.
Petrificus Totalus (575) Latin - totally made into a stone.
Protego (p. 180) Latin - I protect.
Reducto (p. 594) Latin - I lead back or withdraw
Relashio (p. 211) ?
Rennervate (p. 574) Latinate with an extra "n" from nervus for sinew, muscle, or nerve.
Reparo (p. 206) Latin - I recover (renew).
Sectum sempra (p. 518) Latinate - may mean cut forever.
Specialis Revelio (p. 193) Latinate - specialis=particular in Latin, and revelio evidently means "I reveal".
Tergeo (p. 162) Latin - I rub clean, wipe, polish.
Veritaserum - Latinate - means truth serum.

Reproductive Health (RH) Bill Debate in the Philippines
Many believe that economic and social problems in the Philippines are caused by the country's high population rate. Current census indicates that the country has over 90 million people and estimated to grow exponentially in the coming years. This is why lawmakers formulated the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill that will provide reproductive health care programs aimed to slow down the population rate and distribute proper social services to everyone.
The RH bill seeks reproductive health as a "prime responsibility" of the government. Among others it mandates health and local government agencies to educate women and couples about birth control, maternal health and other reproductive health issues. The bill is opposed by the Catholic Church because they disagree with the bill's promotion of artificial birth control methods (i.e use of condoms and contraceptive pills) which they insist is a another form of abortion.
The issue of RH in the United States (my of home for 10 years) is also a heated debate. In fact it has become an all out culture war between two opposing ideologies. For traditionalists, the term "reproductive health" has become a euphemism for abortion and are against it because the secular progressives have used it as a Trojan Horse to advance legalized abortion - a cause the secular progressive agenda is heavily pushing in the US.
Both pro and anti RH bill supporters in the Philippines has good and well thought arguments on why the bill is good or bad for Filipinos. Question is what side are you on? This is a good example of how important it is for Filipino Christians to know all the fact to make a well-informed position and engage others in healthy conversations on the issue. Moreover it's important to know and practice apologetics in our Christian faith to determine which side of the debate really stand for Biblical sanctity of human life and which argument are absurd and who are acting like zealots.

Smartest Parrot
Once upon time, a man had a wonderful parrot. There was no other parrot like it. The parrot could say every word, except one word. The parrot would not say the name of the place where it was born. The name of the place was Catano.
The man felt excited having the smartest parrot but he could not understand why the parrot would not say Catano. The man tried to teach the bird to say Catano however the bird kept not saying the word.
One day, after he had been trying so many times to make the bird say Catano, the man really got very angry. He could not bear it. He picked the parrot and threw it into the chicken house. There were four old chickens for next dinner “You are as stupid as the chickens. Just stay with them” Said the man angrily. Then he continued to humble; “You know, I will cut the chicken for my meal. Next it will be your turn, I will eat you too, stupid parrot”. After that he left the chicken house.
At the first, the man was very nice to the bird but then he got very angry. “You stupid bird!” pointed the man to the parrot. “Why can’t you say the word? Say Catano! Or I will kill you” the man said angrily. Although he tried hard to teach, the parrot would not say it. Then the man got so angry and shouted to the bird over and over; “Say Catano or I’ll kill you”. The bird kept not to say the word of Catano.
The next day, the man came back to the chicken house. He opened the door and was very surprised. He could not believe what he saw at the chicken house. There were three death chickens on the floor. At the moment, the parrot was standing proudly and screaming at the last old chicken; “Say Catano or I’ll kill you”
